Biography

James Monroe Cooper was born 27 Jan 1851 in St. Joseph County, Michigan. Several families living next to each other in the 1850 census in Fawn River, St. Joseph County, Michigan include his maternal and paternal grandparents and aunts and uncles.[1] This family group moved to Noble County, Indiana where his parents died in 1855 and 1856. In 1860, James and his siblings resided with grandparents and aunts. James and his sister Virtue lived with his aunt Beulah Deming (enumerated as male) in the household next to his grandfather Isaac Cooper in Lorain County, Ohio.[2]

The Nemaha County Kansas marriage book Volume A page 105 has the Marriage Record for James M. Cooper of Nemaha County aged 18 years and Mary L. Wyant of Nemaha County aged 13 years. This is followed by the statement: I Samuel R Wiant do hereby certify that in accordance with the authorization of the within license I did on the 25th day of February AD 1870 at my residence in said county join and unite in marriage the within named James M Cooper and Mary L Wiant. Witness my hand and seal this day and year above written. Rev. Samuel R Wiant [3][4]

In the 1870 census, James M and Mary L Cooper reside in Red Vermillion Township (Post Office Seneca), Nemaha County, Kansas. [5] In the 1875 state census, the family resides in Gymsum Creek Township, McPherson County, Kansas. In 1880, they reside in Battle Hill Township, McPherson County, Kansas.[6][7]

The family was in Erin Springs, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) by 2 Jun 1881 when a son was born there. The next two sons and their daughter were born in Wheeler County, Texas in 1884, 1887 and 1889.

There is Texas land grant documentation of land dated 27 Sep 1890 which was abandoned on 3 Sep 1897 (Wheeler County, District Class Bexar Pre-emption, abstract 618, file 7443.)[8] The family either moved back and forth between Texas and Oklahoma or the state boundary changes affected their residence at the time their children were born. Two sons were born in Indian Territory (Oklahoma) in 1892 and 1896. Their last two sons were born in Wheeler County, Texas in 1899 and 1901.

In 1900, James M and Mary L Cooper reside in Wheeler County, Texas.[9]

A family history manuscript states the family left Mobeetie, Wheeler County, Texas in 1907 for Fort Stockton, Texas. Then they moved to Pyote, Texas. From there they moved to a community near Jal, NM which was once called Cooper, New Mexico.

In the 1910 census, they resided in Eddy County, New Mexico[10]; in 1920 Jal was in the newly created Lea County, New Mexico.[11]

James Monroe Cooper died 21 Feb 1929 in the village of Jal, Lea County, New Mexico. [12] He was buried in Carlsbad Municipal Cemetery, Division A, Block 25.[13]
