One of the saddest deaths that will touch many hearts is that of O. F. Dieffenbacher, of Clarion, which occurred early Monday morning, October 21,1929, at the St. Francis Hospital, Pittsburgh, where he had been taken several weeks ago for treatment and observation in the hope that he might receive help and restoration. He had not been really well for over a year, but with his indomitable will power, he was not taken down with sickness until about three months ago. His malady was of an inward nature and seemed to sap his strength very rapidly. Its encroachments were beyond human power to stay and he sank gradually till dissolution intervened. For more than thirty years Mr. Dieffenbacher has been in active business for himself, and previous to that had been employed at the Jones House, by B. H. Frampton at the old Opera House, and by Ed. L. Fox at different times. During all of this time he established a reputation as a careful, methodical manager, and an upright and honorable business man. His store for many years was a popular resort for men as they waited to get their newspapers under the old ways of hauling them by stage coach., then by train, and now by bus, etc. All of the questions of town, county, state and nation were fully discussed in the gathers thus formed, and many problems were presented and some solved. Also, all the items of local news were detailed at "Diffys" store. In all his relations to and dealings with the public he retained the confidence and respect of the people. Mr. Dieffenbacher was a man of Christian spirit, word and action. When fully informed, as he generally was, his judgment was reverent, just, fair and always kindly in spirit. With these characteristics being a part of his life, it was only natural that he should affiliate with a Christian church and some years ago he and Mrs. Dieffenbacher became members of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Clarion, where they continued to worship up to the time of his death. The genial and kindly spirit of Mr. Dieffenbacher led him to seek the association and friendship of his fellowmen, and he became a popular member of fraternal organizations. He was a member of Clarion Lodge, No. 252, and Clarion Encampment No. 94, 1. O. O. F., and of Clarion Lodge No. 277, F. & A. M., Coudersport Consistory, and of the Joppa Club and Kiwanis Club of Clarion, and was also a member of the Maccabee order. In all of these relations he continually manifested his interest in his fellowmen. He was Tmstee of the Kiwanis Club for several years and gave a really great service to the club and its membership, and his place cannot be filled as he filled it. Orion Fuller Dieffenbacher was a son of Charles and Matilda Dieffenbacher, and was born in Butler on August 31, 1867. He was married to Miss Nan Clough, of Clarion, on his birthday, August 31, 1887. She now survives him with two sons, namely: Charles C., of Pittsburgh, and Frank Paul Dieffenbacher, of Clarion. Two children preceded him in death. There also survive one brother, Lloyd E. Dieffenbacher, of Erie, Pa., and one sister, Mrs. Maysie Rinehart, of Canton, Oh. She was prevented from being present at the funeral by reason of being in Texas and being unable to reach Clarion on time. The funeral services were conducted at his late home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with his pastor, Rev. P. A. Galbreath, officiating. Following these services, the brethren of Clarion Lodge, No. 277, F. & A. M., took charge, and the beautiful and impressive ritual committal service was observed as the body of Mr. Dieffenbacher was lowered to its last resting place in the Clarion cemetery. Those from a distance attending the obsequies were: Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Rinehart, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dieffenbacher, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Donahue and Miss Evelyn and Clyde Donahue, Mrs. Packard, Alice Dieffenbacher, Mrs. Inez Fairman, Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Blose, Miss Flora Patterson, Mrs. Aggie Morris, Mr. and Mrs. Morrison, Mrs. Blanche Huff, Mrs. Flo Rulofson.

Mrs. Nancy (Clough) Dieffenbacher, one of Clarion’s best known and most highly esteemed ladies, after a sickness covering a period of about three years, passed away last Monday, August 22, 1932, at 12 o’clock noon. Mrs. Dieffenbacher has been a very patient sufferer seeming to understand fully the situation in her case. She gradually sank lower from day to day. As life was rapidly fading away she sought the consolation of religion, and it is understood, summoned Rev. Father A. A. Fischer, of the Immaculate Conception Church and sought spiritual peace, under his guidance and direction, and at the last received through him the last rites of the church. Her spirit departed as she rested in peace. Mrs. Dieffenbacher was born June 17, 1868, in Tennessee, the daughter of Thomas and Anna Clough. When she was quite young the family removed to Clarion County and settled first at Reidsburg but later came to Clarion and this has been her home ever since. She was united in marriage to O. F. Dieffenbacher, August 31, 1887. Mr. Dieffenbacher preceded her in death a few years ago, but she is survived by two sons, namely, Charles C. Dieffenbacher of Wilkinsburg, and Frank Paul Dieffenbacher of Clarion. There survive also three sisters: Mrs. C. J. Blose, Wilkinsburg; Mrs. Flora Patterson, Jeannette, and Mrs. May Lathrope, Meces, Calif. The deceased was a very active lady in social and fraternal affairs and was highly esteemed for her excellent executive ability. She was quite prominent in the organization of the Service Star Legion, and was elected to the highest office of the organization for one term during which she aided materially in perfecting the organization. In other organizations she held a prominent place in the community. Her funeral took place Wednesday afternoon from the late home, the Rev. Fr. A. A. Fisher, officiating, and the interment was made in the Clarion Cemetery.
