DECATUR HERALD 5/20/1902
John Ward supervisor of S.Wheatland township, died of dropsy at his home Saturday morning after a long illness. For several weeks his condition has been such that his death was regarded as being likely to occur at any moment and while that was true his death was none of the less a shock to his many friends. John Ward was one of the old settlers of Macon county. He was born three and a half miles south of Decatur in 1842. His father was William Ward who settled in Macon county and an uncle of the deceased was the first white man to settle in wheatland, coming to this state from Kentucky several years before the advent of William Ward. Except for the time that he was in the army,John Ward lived all of his life in Macon county. He went to the front with the Forty First Illinois in August, 1861 and was discharge three years later as a sergeant. He was wounded in the service.
The deceased is survived by his wife,Mattie LeMaster and five children, four daughters and one son. The children are Misses Rosa,Maude and Martha Ward,Mrs. Minnie Phillips and Claude Ware. He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters,W.J.Ward,Missouri, George W.Ward of Colorado, Mrs. Nancy J.Logan and Mrs.Maggie Elder of Wheatland township. He has three half brothers living Hiram Ward of S.Wheatland Franklin of Blue Mound township and Rial Ward of Moultrie county.
John Ward was held in high esteem by all who knew him. In the public affairs of Wheatland township he always took an active interest and was frequently called upon to serve in an official capacity, having been school director, school trustee and supervisor being in the last years of his second term when death came to him. John Ware was well know for his honesty. He was proud of his integrity and was a stickler on points if there was any possibility that his acts might be misconstrued. He wanted to be honest and was anxious to treat all men as he would be treated. Those persons who knew him would venture all they had that if John Ward said that he would do a thing there was no question about it.
The funeral will occur this Sunday afternoon. The services being at Salem School. The funeral procession will leave the residence at 2:00 oclock.
