"Grimsby Independent, 15 Dec 1915, p. 1,5
Dr. Algernon Woolverton, one of the best known of this city's older medical practitioners, is dead, according to cable advices received from Italy today by the Mercantile Trust Co. The late Dr. Woolverton went to Italy two years ago in an effort to regain his health, which had been poor for several years. It was while returning from a trip to the Old Country some years ago that he was seized with a stroke, just as he was leaving the shisp at Montreal. The cable states that death occurred in Florence, on December 4. Dr. Woolverton was a son of the late Dr. Woolverton of Grimsby, who was old United Empire Loyalist stock. He was educated at the university of Toronto, where he graduated in arts and medicine, and as a young man came to Hamilton, where for many years he practiced his profession. For a number of yearss he held the position of medical superintendant of the Federal Life Assurance Company, and was also a member of hte local board of education. In this latter capacity he served the city faithfully and well and was considered one of hte best men of his day on matters of education. He was also greatly interested in the public library, to the board of which he was elected as representative of the board of education in 1902. Three years later, he was elected chairman of the board, of which he was a member up to the time of his leaving the city. When a young man, Dr. Woolverton took an active interest in clean sport, having enjoyed the distinction of being one of the best cricketers in this country. He was also an able lawn bowler, and was a member of the Thistle Club. Deceased was twice married. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, the latter now residing in Boston, Mass. A brother, E. J. Woolverton, of Grimsby, on of the best known fruit growers of the district, also survives. Nothing relative to funeral arrangements has yet been announced."

Woolverton Park deserves respect, preservation
Hamilton Spectator
Re: Woolverton Park
Woolverton Park, one block east of John Street on Charlton Avenue, was named in honour of Frances Woolverton, a kindergarten teacher who worked tirelessly to educate the public about the importance of outdoor recreation and its benefits to the health and well-being of our children.
The playgrounds association she helped form in 1909 is considered the forerunner of the city’s department of recreation. She was a council member who helped in the formation of Gage Park in 1918. Her efforts earned her the name Mother of Hamilton’s Playgrounds. Money from her husband Dr. Algernon Woolverton’s estate was given to the City of Hamilton for the purchase of park and playground equipment.
Today, part of Woolverton Park has been deemed surplus by the city and plans are in the works to sell it to a developer. A 70-unit apartment building is to replace a 15-unit one. Many zoning bylaws will be broken by trying to put such a large building on a small lot. The excuse is residential intensification.
I think this is horribly wrong and the people of Hamilton should be up in arms to see that this disrespect for our hardworking founders does not take place.
Len Wilson, Hamilton"
