KEYSER, W.Va. — Harold Kenneth Carvey Sr., 97, of Keyser, went home to be with the Lord on June 24, 2007. Born March 12, 1910, in North Braddock, Pa., he was the son of Charles H. Carvey and Alice Cyrena (Leps) Carvey. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn (Wolverton) Carvey; and a brother Charles L. Carvey. He was a graduate of North Braddock High School, West Liberty State College, and the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned Bachelor and Master of Arts Degrees. He also did extensive graduate work in special education at the University of Maryland, Radford University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of London, England. From 1936 to 1940, Mr. Carvey taught in the following schools: Wiley Ford Elementary, Burlington Elementary and Junior High, Keyser High and Piedmont High Schools. He was principal of New Creek Elementary School from 1940 to 1966. He then retired from the Mineral County School System and worked in Allegany County for eight years as a guidance counselor at Fort Hill High School and at Valley High School, where he became the principal. Mr. Carvey believed in life-long learning, but his heart was with early childhood education. He organized and was Director of the first Project Headstart in Mineral County, he conducted the first Special Education classes and the first pre-kindergarten programs for four and five year olds at New Creek School. He focused on early childhood reading intervention and pre-service teacher training. Mr. Carvey was a lifetime member of the Keyser Presbyterian Church. He was a founding member and first president of the Fort Ashby Volunteer Fire Company and a past president of the Keyser Volunteer Fire Company. He also held memberships in the Davis Lodge 51 for 79 years, the Knights of the Croix, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and many state and national education associations. He is survived by one son, Harold Kenneth Carvey Jr. of Keyser; three daughters, Ellen Tribett of Massillon, Ohio, Kathryn Carvey of Keyser, and Carolyn Tinney of Charleston; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, 111 S. Mineral St., Keyser. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2007 at Markwood Funeral Home with the Rev.
