KEYSER, W.Va. — Ken Carvey, 69, of Keyser, died on Thursday, April 14, 2011, at his residence. Ken Carvey was born Harold Kenneth Carvey Jr. on Sept. 7, 1941, in Keyser, the second of four children and the only son of Harold Sr. and Kathryn (Wolverton) Carvey. Raised in a family of educators, Ken pursued a career in education, attaining undergraduate degrees in math and social studies from West Virginia State University and a Masters in Education administration from West Virginia College of Graduate Studies, with a focus on curriculum and management. His long career began teaching the fourth grade class at Belle Elementary and spanned 30 years in the Kanawha County School System, including terms as the assistant principal of Lincoln and Dupont Junior High Schools. From 1982 until his retirement in 1999, Ken was the principal of Cedar Grove Community School. In the years following his retirement, Ken ran a successful sporting goods business that provided sports apparel to West Virginia colleges, high schools and youth leagues. Ken was a sports enthusiast throughout his life, a dedicated hunter and skilled handicapper whose Kentucky Derby picks will be sorely missed. He was inducted into the Keyser High School Hall of Fame as a member of the 1956 West Virginia Class A state championship football team. In his spare time, Ken was an avid reader and his home was filled with books that he would generously discuss and loan to anyone that shared his interest. A devoted father, a loving brother and a ferocious advocate for all that he loved, Ken is survived by his daughter, Kristan and her husband Bruce; his sisters, Ellen, Kathryn and Carolyn; his dear friend and brother, John Barger; and nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to mention, all of whom will miss his powerful personality and mischievous sense of humor. Ken passed following a long illness that never overcame his amazing will. One of his greatest desires was to be well enough to visit all the churches of the people that were praying for him. Friends will be received at the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser, on Sunday, April 17, 2011, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday, April 18, 2011, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Tinney officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Ashby Cemetery, Fort Ashby. The Cumberland Times-News, April 16, 2011
