Research Notes: Husband - Thaddeus Robert (Bob) Cannon
Second marriage to Elizabeth Margaret (Welch) #608 After leaving Dora
Nunnaly, Robert moved from the Dardanelle, Arkansas area to the Heavener,
Oklahoma area according to his son, Ernest Cannon.
Information on death and burial are from Mary Hickerson who has the info
from his tombstone. However it lists his birth year as 1868, but his
marriage info would have had him only 13 years old, but he was then 23.
Therefore either the birth date (1868) or the marriage year (1881) is in
error by ten years. Since the children were born in 1882 and 1884 it is
logical to assume that the marriage date is correct.
Personal research of Walton Cannon, during June 3-5, 1989 determined the
following information:
Census lists him as Robert Cannon. Other records indicate T.R. Cannon,
and Robert Cannon. People knew him to be called Bob. Walton Cannon's
assumption is that T.R. Cannon is T. Robert Cannon.
1900 Census, Eagle Township, Polk county, Arkansas shows T.R. Cannon's
birth date as May 1861, and as being 39 years old. Walton Cannon
questions the accuracy of this information.
Conversations with oldtimers, Sidney Elder, 608 W. First St. Heavener, OK
74937; Esker Webb, of near Glendale Community; and Mack Ballentine of
Wister, OK,and with Bill Young of Wister, who also is in possession of the
early records of Mt. View Baptist Church; followed by examination of the
school enumeration records for Independence Community school for 1921-1924
revealed the following:
T. R. Cannon was known as "Bob". He had two stepchildren by his wife's
previous marriage: James W. "Bud" Welch (also listed as James E. or J.E.)
born Jan., 1893, and Beulah Welch born two years later, Feb., 1895. In
addition he had four children by Margaret Elizabeth: Vera (a daughter)
Born Mar. 5, 1900 Jessie (a son) born Sept. 27, 1902 Ola (a daughter) born
Feb. 17, 1905 Lois (a daughter) born Jan. 16, 1908
T.R. was a member of Mt. View Church in 1910. E.M. joined by baptism on
Aug. 7, 1910. Bud and Beulah joined by letter transfer on Aug. 7, 1910
from "Pilgrim's Rest", OK.
They lived for a year in the barn of Ely Webb, father of Esker Webb and
great uncle of Bill Young, in 1912, Where the family cleared and
cultivated "new ground". They then moved to the Independence Community,
near Heavener. The daughters, Vera and Ola taught school at Independence
and later taught somewhere in western Oklahoma. I have been unable to find
any record about Jessie except for his school enumeration 1921-1923 when
he became 21 years old. No school records were available. The family
apparently lived in the Independence Community area from December 1912
until after the death of T.R. in 1923.
T.R. and E.M. probably were married between 1896 and1900, but I have been
unable to find any record of their date or place of marriage. I found T.
Robert Cannon & Margaret (With James, Beulah, and Vera) in the 1900 census
of Polk County, Eagle Twp, Arkansas, which could be their place of
marriage and the birthplace of Vera who was just 3 months old at the
census.
I have not been able to find T.R. Cannon in any other census unless he is
the the "Robert" who is one of three sons (and two daughters) of W.C.
Cannon in the 1880 census of Yell County, Dardanelle Township, Arkansas.
The Birth-year of Robert (his age was listed as 21,which would make his
birth year 1859) is in good agreement with the birth-year of T.R. from his
Marriage record to Dora Isabil Nunnelley on file in the Danville, Ark.
County Clerk's office, Marriage book D, page 96, which shows T.R. was 23
yrs old in Dec., ice, Marriage book D, page 96, which shows T.R. was 23
yrs old in Dec., 1881. The agreement with the birth date of T.Robert shown
in the 1900 census of Polk County is not so good. It is shown as May 1861
(But Walton, son of W.C. Cannon was shown as 19 yrs. old in the 1880 Yell
County census which would have had as shown as 19 yrs. old in the 1880
Yell County census which would have had HIM born in 1861). T. Robert's
Grave is located South of Wister Lake in Glendale Community, Section 5N,
Range 25E, located directly behind the Mt. View Baptist Church. Directly
on one side of his grave is the grave of his second wife, Margaret
Elizabeth Cannon - Mar. 8, 1874 - Mar 1, 1957. On the other side of ret
Elizabeth Cannon - Mar. 8, 1874 - Mar 1, 1957. On the other side of his
grave is that of a child, Lois Cannon - Jan 18, 1908 - Sept. 16, 1911.
* Record of Yell County personal tax records for 1893 listed "Mrs D.I.
Nunnelly", so T. R. had probably already left her and she had consequently
reassumed her maiden name. Dardanelle County Courthouse records of Court
actions showed that Dora Isabel sued for divorce in late 1903, and the
divorce was granted in early 1904. In the meantime T. R. had already
fathered three children with Elizabeth Margaret in Oklahoma. At that time
Oklahoma was still Indian territory and not a part of the U.S.. Records
are poor for that period, and probably marriage and divorce were taken
lightly or not at all.

Previously married to Thaddeus Robert Cannon. After divorcing Robert
Cannon, Dora Nunnaly married a Kersey in Dardanelle, Arkansas.
Died a widow near Delaware, Arkansas. To the best of my recollection, the
Hudson cemetery is located off a gravel road that connects between Bethel
Community (on the Nebo road) at the foot of Mt. Nebo to Arkansas State
Hyway 7 just east of Mosley Community; also known as Slow Fork.
