== Biography ==
John Thomas Hanks was the son of Franklin Buford Hanks and
Emily (Lewis) Hanks.He was born in Scottsboro, TN. He married Flora Burkey on Sep 19,1876in Jackson County, Illinois. He owned a lumber company and sawmill, he traveled around Southeast Missouri wherever virgin lumber was available and when that was felled he moved his business to Arkansas.
John died at the age of 54 on Jan. 16, 1909 in Success, Clay County, Arkansas. His son-in-law, Walter F. Sample, drove done in the freezing January cold in a horse cart to pick up John's body in Arkansas. Walter brought John's body back to rural Poplar Bluff, Missouri and buried it in his and his wife's, Emily Ann (Hanks) Sample's, backyard. There never was a headstone, to my knowledge.

John and Flora had six children. Only two lived to adulthood.

Flora (Burkey) Hanks died on Jan. 25, 1897, when his daughter, Emily,was 12 and his son, ,was only 5 years old. So John hired a housekeeper, Nannie Boatright. Eventually, Nannie became John's second wife. They had two sons.

My grandmother, Myrtle Bertha (Sample) Brown, daughter of Emily, told me that Nannie Boatright, the 2nd wife, treated her stepchildren (Emily & Frederick) badly. So, at the age of 15, Emily married Walter F. Sample, who had worked for her father, and took her little brother, Frederick, with her to raise in her home in rural Poplar Bluff, MO. Emily and Frederick were very close and both spent the rest of their years in or around Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
