== Biography ==
Frederick was a WWI veteran, as well as a successful business man whoowned and Operated Hanks Ice & Fuel Company in Poplar Bluff, MO.
His mother, Flora (Burkey) Hanks, died on Jan. 25, 1897, when his sister, Emily, was 12 and Frederick was only 5 years old. So their father, John, hired a housekeeper, Nannie Boatright. Eventually, Nannie became John's second wife. John and Nannie had two sons. Joseph & John Hanks.
My grandmother, Myrtle Bertha (Sample) Brown, daughter of Emily, told me that Nannie Boatright, the 2nd wife, treated her stepchildren (Emily & Frederick) badly. So, at the age of 15, Emily married Walter F. Sample, who had worked for her father, and took her little brother, Frederick, with her to raise in her home in rural Poplar Bluff, Missouri. As a result, sister and brother, Emily and Frederick, were very close and both spent the rest of their years in or around Poplar Bluff, Missouri.
Emily, frequently had big picnics at her house in rural Poplar Bluff,Missouri. They would churn ice cream & eat hot dogs, and no one was allowed to start eating until Fred arrived. Sometimes they would all wait for over an hour for him to show up because he lived in the town ofPoplar Bluff and it took over an hour to get to Emily's house over rough, rutted country roads. My mother, Elsie Ruth (Brown) Sparkman, told me this story. She was one of Fred's great nieces, who always attended her grandma Emily's picnics. Mom had extremely fond memories of the picnics and of Fred and her beloved grandparents, Emily and Walter.
Frederick Burkey Hanks married Delpha Dallion( Appleby) in Greensville, Wayne, MO. on 06 NOV 1924.
Fred and Delpha had three children:
William,
Edna Louise, and
Frieda.
