Known to his family and friends as Will, he was born in McNairy County Tennessee to William Aulsey Carroll and Sarah Elizabeth Wolverton. He married Zuleka Bell in December of 1891 in Montague County Texas where their daughter, Myrtle Agatha was born in 1893. Following Zuleka's death in 1895 he married Emily Augusta Sherrod in Gainesville, Texas December 22, 1898.
At the dawn of the twentieth century they moved to Chickasaw Nation Indian Territory, where their four children, Miriam Beatrice "Trixie", William Everett "Jack", Orian Taft "O.T." and Elmo Dean were born. They lived in Lone Grove, Carter county, then Marlow, Stephens county OK from 1900 to 1917.

He was a loving and gentle man who was very involved in music according to his son, Jack and daughter Myrtle Carroll Powell. He played the violin and directed the church choir as well as a community-type choir. For a time he attended Showalter Music Academy, location unknown, according to Myrtle.

She remembered that when she was very small ("just beginning to remember" as she put it) they used to attend the annual 'Nocona (Texas) picnic' and her father had a horse-drawn carousel that he set up at the picnic - and, since a carousel needed music - he played the violin while the horse pulled the carousel round and round.

Will died suddenly on Christmas day 1918 in Freeport, Texas, where the family had stopped to spend the holiday with Emily's sister while moving back to Oklahoma from San Benito, Texas.
