Del Madison Also Badly Hurt. Bennett's Body Thrown About 80 Feet And Badly Mangled

Ed Bennett jr. was almost instantly killed Friday morning Feb. 22, at the Bennett & Madison saw mill nertheast of Cassville on Rock House creek, by a boiler explosion. Del Madison's face was badly scalded and he was knocked unconscious. Mr. Madison's little boy was struck and knocked down but was not badly injured.

Both ends of the boiler of the engine used to operate the saw mill were blown out. Mr. Bennett was off-bearing lumber at the moment the explosion occurred and was in the direct path, catching the full force of the steam and one end of the boiler. He was hurled some 80 feet against a sapling, his head badly bruised and crushed, his face mangled and one arm and one leg badly broken. He never regained consciousness and died about two hours after the horrible accident occurred.

He was hurled over the moving saw the teeth of which tore his face and one arm badly.

Mr. Bennett was doing double duty Friday, firing the engine and off-bearing too, as the mill was short on hands. He was about 23 years old and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bennett sr. who live northeast of Cassville. He leaves a wife and a small child. Mrs. Bennett is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Beeson. He was an industrious young man and held in high esteem by the entire community. His untimely death was a sad blow to his family and many friends.

The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J. T. Brattin of the Baptist church of which Mr. Bennett was a member and interment made at the Ennes cemetery."

Ceola Emily Welty passed away at St Vincent's Hospital after a short illness.
Mrs Welty was the 3rd child born to Marggie Barcroft & Henry Beeson. She married her 1st husband Edgar Walter Bennett in 1916. After Ed's death she married Malven Lee Welty on 24 Oct 1924, who also preceded in her death. She was a longtime Cassville resident. She returned to Cassville from CO in 1975. She was a homemaker & a member of the Baptist church.
Besides her husbands, Mrs Welty was preceded in death by her parents, plus siblings: Roy Beeson & Mrs Stella Nafus.
Survors include children: Walter Bennett & Margaret Ella Kier; siblings Sharrock Beeson & Carrie Reno; 7 grandchildren & 9 gr grandchildren.
Rev. Don Beeson conducted the services.
