Delbert was one of six children born to George and Nora Ashford. His siblings were Herman, Elmer, Maxine, Doris, and Lyle who died as a child.

On June 12, 1937, he married Loena Lillian Buckle <http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=?93840877>, daughter of Thomas Charles Buckle and Mollie Leona Jones. They were married in Vancouver, Clark County, Washington. They had six children:
