JOE B. WOLVERTON

Joe B. Wolverton, youngest son of J. K. and Rilla A. Wolverton, was born in Derby, Lucas county, Iowa, on January 26, 1903, and died at his home near Leroy, Decatur county, Iowa, on August 25, 1923, aged 20 years, 6 months and 29 days.

He had been a sufferer with the flu since March 6, 1923. An operation seemed to be necessary for injuries received last fall while playing ball, which was performed in July, but gave no permanent relief. He continued to fail, and everything known to medical skill was done to restore him to health, but he sank gradually until the end came on Saturday.

A postmortem examination revealed the fact that he was suffering with cancer of the kidney. His sufferings were intense and he died in great agony.

He was a bright, industrious boy, a junior in the Leroy high school last year. He realized that the end was drawing nearer all the time and after looking back over his short life, he concluded that it was not as he wished it had been, and after calling council on that subject, said that his soul was at rest.

He told his mother that he was not afraid to die and told a friend that the Saviour was all the hope he had. His sun has gone down while it is yet day but he has found peace and rest.

He leaves to mourn their loss his parents and two brothers and one sister, Earl L. of Lucas county, Guerney and Twila, at home, besides other near relatives and a host of friends. The bereaved ones will have the sympathy of all.

Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Provan, of Derby, assisted by the pastor of the Friends church at Smyrna, were held at the Last Chance church on Tuesday, August 28, followed by interment in the Last Chance cemetery.
