John H. Wait, one of the best known and most respected citizens of Nichols, died at his home in that town on Sunday morning. He was born in Waits Settlement, now Waits, Town of Owego, on Nov. 17, 1848, and spent the greater part of his life on the homestead farm. He held the office of Commissioner of Highways of the Town of Owego for six years, and during his incumbency he was known as "Honest John" Wait. About 18 years ago, he removed to Nichols and engaged in the produce business with his cousin, George Wait. He retired from business about three years ago on account of ill health. He was an active member of the Methodist Church in Nichols and was a trustee at the time of his death. Few men were better known and had more genuine friends in the Towns of Owego and Nichols than Mr. Wait. He was noted for his honesty, integrity, and fair dealing. Every one of his acquaintances was his friend and he was a true friend of all who knew him. In the death of Mr. Wait a good man has gone to his reward. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Martha J. (White) Wait, with whom he was married on January 31, 1872; one son, Frank J. Wait, who resides on the old homestead farm at Waits; one daughter, Delphine, wife of Alvah Wright, of Nichols; two grandsons and two granddaughters. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at the residence, and was largely attended. Burial was made in the Nichols Cemetery.
