Frank J. Wait, a well-known retired farmer, died on Friday morning, June 2, at his home: 42 Temple Street, after a long illness, aged 66 years. His funeral was held at the house on Sunday afternoon, the Reverence Robert E. Fletcher officiating. The burial was in the Tioga Cemetery.

Mr. Wait was a son of John Henry and Martha (WHITE) WAIT and was born on October 28, 1872, at Waits. He attended school at the Owego free academy. He conducted a large farm at Waits many years with great success. He retired in 1929 and removed to this village, where he purchased a home. Mr Wait was a man of extra ordinary abilities and strict integrity and was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends. His death is keenly regretted.

The farm at Waits is now conducted by his son, John H. Wait. This farm has been in five generations of the Wait family. The pioneer settler, Henry Wait, purchased the farm on June 1, 1818. It contained 1,000 acres of land and was rectangular in shape. It extended from Waits south to the Pennsylvania state line. When Mr. Wait took over the farm it was a wilderness and he began clearing it. He was a man of wealth for those days, possessing $10,000. He purchased the farm at $2.25 an acre.

Five generations have occupied the farm for 128 years and each of the occupants had begun housekeeping there. These occupants have been Henry Wait, William Wait, John H. Wait, Frank J. Wait, and now John H. Wait 2nd.

Mr Wait leaves his wife, Mrs. Sybil Wait; two daughters, Miss Myrtle Wait, of this village, and Mrs. Gertrude Oaks, of Newark Valley; one son John H. Wait, of Waits and _____ grandchildren. He was a brother to Mrs. Della Wright of Nichols.

Obituary from Thursday June 8, 1939. Probably from the Owego newspaper. The number of grandchildren listed in this obituary is obscured by damage to the paper in the clipping that I have.

Sybil is buried in the same section and lot as Frank J Wait and Myrtle Wait. The stones for Frank and Sybil are identical. It is thought that Sybil is the wife of Frank, and Myrtle is the daughter.
