Eleanor Vastine Seitz, 98, formerly of Riverside, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, at Grandview Health Home.

She was born on April 16, 1919, in Danville, the daughter of the late Hugh Spencer and Sarah (Mettler) Vastine.

Eleanor graduated from Danville High School in 1937, where she was a commencement speaker representing the farming community. She then went on to graduate from the Geisinger School of Nursing in 1940 with her RN degree.

On May 30, 1942, Eleanor married Carlton W. Seitz, and together they celebrated 44 years of marriage, prior to his death in January 1986.

After working at Geisinger for a few years, Eleanor took time off to raise three children. She went back to work in 1961 and later retired in 1985. While at Geisinger, she worked as an assistant head nurse, head nurse, supervisor of nurses, and ended her career in infection control for the hospital. She was very passionate about being a nurse and working at Geisinger. Eleanor enjoyed relating stories about the hospital back in its earlier days. One of her goals for going back to work was to help put her children through college and have them graduate debt-free. Mission accomplished.

Eleanor was a member of Mahoning Presbyterian Church and a member of the Women?s Association. She was also a member of the Geisinger Alumni Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Eleanor was always supportive of her husband and children?s activities, whether it was going to an American Legion Band concert, where her husband was the director, or to her children?s school activities and athletic events. She also found time to be a den mother for Cub Scouts and Brownies.

Eleanor enjoyed reading, but one of her greatest enjoyments was knitting. She knitted many sweaters and afghans for family members.

She is survived by a daughter: Eleanor Seitz MacLean, and her husband, William, of Bridgeport, W.Va.; a son: Carlton W. Seitz II of Selinsgrove; four grandchildren: Will MacLean and wife, Emily, Matt MacLean and wife, Amy, Brooke Joseph and husband, Joe, and Michael Seitz and wife, Shannon; nine great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son: Frederick 'Rick' Seitz; and siblings: Polly, Rachael, Sue, Naomi, Hugh and Edwin.

The family would like to thank the staff at Grandview for making Mother's stay comfortable, especially the caregivers on the Pavilion Wing for the compassion shown to all of the residents, even on hectic days.

Funeral arrangements for Eleanor will be announced at a later date.
