ABBOTT SERVICES SET FOR TUESDAY
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 P.M., at the Gude Mortuary for Clarence Delon Abbott, 18, who drowned in a farm pond north of Otoe Sunday morning.
The Rev. Victor Ireland will officiate with burial in Wyuka Cemetery, Nebraska City, Nebraska.
Clarence was born on March 25, 1951, in Nebraska City, Nebraska, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Abbott.
He lived his entire life in Nebraska City and worked for the Nebraska City Grocery. He graduated from Nebraska City High School in the class of 1969.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Martin Abbott, a sister, Mr. Larry (Mardeena) Briley of Percival, Iowa, and two brothers, Barry and Carl at home.
According to Deputy Sheriff Tom Durant, Abbott and three companions, Dave Ahrens, 19, Nebraska City, and Robin, 18, Cindy, 14, Ahrens, Weeping Water, had gone to the farm pond on the Calvin Shutz farm, one mile north of Otoe, about 8:30 Saturday night.
Deputy Durant said that the two girls were sisters and that the foursome was enjoying swimming in the pond.
Deputy Durant said that between 12:30 and 1 A.M., Cindy and Dale were near the shore listening to a radio. He said that Clarence and Robin had been near the water. Robin came to the other two and said she had not seen Clarence for a while.
After a preliminary search for Clarence, the three took his car and summoned help, according to the report.
Deputy Durant said that after he arrived at the scene, several law enforcement agencies were called, including the highway patrol, a game warden, Police Chief Mike Kersten of Syracuse and others.
Deputy Durant said that after being called, he could find no trace of Abbott. A request was forwarded to the OPPD for floodlights. Farmers in the area supplied a rowboat and an outboard motor.
When the search failed to produce the body of Abbott, Nebraska City scuba divers, Paul and Art Lima, were summoned. The body was found in about five minutes at 3:30 A.M.
Clement Landis, Jr., also assisted with recovery operations.
Dr. C. R. Williams, Syracuse, pronounced Abbott dead upon examination.
Members of the Nebraska City rescue squad making the call were Ken White, LeRoy Fletchall, Tom Bryant and Gary Harpster.
Information found in The Nebraska City News-Press, Monday, July 14, 1969.
