Major Washington McCormick died from injuries he receive on his ranch in the Bitter Root vally, Monday. He was attempting to stay a loose board on the roof of one of his buildings when a gust of wind carried him and the roof to the ground, crushing his skull and killing him.
Mr. McCormick was born in Indiana in 1835, admitted to the bar in 1854, and went to Utah in 1857 where he was attorney general and chief justice. He came to Montana in 1863, settled in Virginia City, where he practiced law for two years and was elected to the legislature from Madison in 1864. He was secretary of the first democratic convention ever held in Montana. Also in 1864 he moved to Missoula and was three terms (1875-78) in the legislature from Missoula county. He was also a member of the great convention of January 1884.
He was married in 1869 to Miss Kate Higgins, sister of Captain C.P. Higgins, of the Higgins Western Bank in Missoula. By this union there were seven children, all of whom are now living. The funeral took place in Missoula on Wednesday.
