Hardy R. Gudger, Jr.

SALISBURY - Hardy R. Gudger, Jr., 72, of Salisbury, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 25, 1936, in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Ruth Schenk Cook and Hardy R. Gudger, Sr. He was educated in Salisbury schools and graduated from Boyden High School in 1955.

Mr. Gudger was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War before retiring in 1974 with the rank of E6. He later worked 20 years for Cone Mills before retiring. He was a member and two-time Commander of the Samuel C. Hart American Legion Post 14.

Mr. Gudger was preceded in death by his wife, Daisy Patterson Gudger, on Feb. 27, 2002.

Survivors include his children, Michael S. Gudger of Winston-Salem, Johnny L. Gudger, Linda M. Conkel, Susan R. Burrell and Timothy D. Gudger, all of Salisbury; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held at the U.S. National Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
