"Elmo G. Gonsar Sr., 84, Reedsville RD1

LEWISBURG - Elmo G. Gonsar Sr., 84, Reedsville RD1, died yesterday morning in his home. He had been in failing health for a number of years and was hospitalized on numerous occasions.

Mr. Gonsar had lived in the Reedsville area since 1976 and prior to that had lived at Lewisburg RD1 and Winfield for many years.

Born Feb. 2, 1901, in Sunbury, he was the son of the late Walter I. and Estella Gulick Gonsar. His wife, the former Harriet L. WArntz, died in 1969.

Mr. Gonsar retired in 1967 after 25 years' employment as a millwright by the American Car and Foundry, Milton. Prior to that he operated the Winfield Garage for eight years. He also owned and operated a service station on Seventh and Market streets, Sunbury, from 1930 to 1936.

He was the welterweight system champion wrestler in 1926 and 1927 for the Eastern division of the Pennsylvania Railroad where he was employed in earlier life. He was a professional wrestler in the Sunbury and Williamsport areas.

He is survived by one son, Elmo G. Jr. of Milroy; one daughter, Mrs. Shirley Metzger of Winfield RD1; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. [NOTE: Shirley was actually the younger sister of Elmo's wife Harriet - they "adopted" her when her mother died (Shirley was 6 months old at the time)]

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Cronrath Funeral Home, Lewisburg, by the Rev. Donald E. Mummert, pastor of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Winfield. Burial will be in the Lewisburg Cemetery.

Friends may call in the funeral home Friday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service."

"Mrs. Gonsar, 62, Mifflinburg RD1, Montour Native

Mrs. Harriet L. Gonsar, 62, of Mifflinburg RD1, died Friday at the Evangelical Community Hospital where she had been a patient since August 8. She had been in ill health for several years and seriously ill for a week.

A native of Danville, she was born on Jan. 19, 1907, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Julia Strouse Warntz.

In September 1923, she married Elmo Gonsar. Her death breaks a marital union of more than 45 years.

She was a member of the Winfield United Methodist Church.

Her last employment was with Bucknell University but she was forced to retire because of ill health.

She is survived by a son, Elmo, Jr., of Lewistown and a daughter, Shirley, wife of Dean Metzger, of Winfield. Nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. [NOTE: Shirley was actually the younger sister of Harriet - Harriet and Elmo "adopted" her when her mother died (Shirley was 6 months old at the time)]


She is also survived by two brothers, Garner, of Sunbury and Claude, of Danville and two sisters, Mrs. John Geise of Manchester, N.Y. and Mrs. Tannatt, of Des Moines, iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. from the Kermitt E. Maurer funeral home, New Berlin, wither her pastor, Rev. Paul Wolgemuth, officiating.

Interment wil lbe in the Lewisburg Cemetery."
