Mary Velma Lester was born Mary Velma Ferguson, one of six children born to Thomas Wayne Ferguson and his wife Belle Zora (Dewitte) Ferguson. Both parents are buried in Bucklin, Kansas. Believe Mary Velma, who was known as "Velma" was born in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Her brothers and sisters include, Troy D. Ferguson, Guy W. Ferguson, Mamie R. Ferguson, Bonnie Ferguson and Thomas A. Ferguson, who was in the Navy in World War I and died of influenza in Belfast, Ireland on Nov. 25th, 1918. Most of the family lived in Baldwin City, Kansas, from 1909 to approx. 1920. Thomas A. Ferguson is buried in Prairie City Cemetery in Baldwin City, Kansas.
