Gladys J. (Evans) Mains, 91, of Danville, died at 6:56 p.m. Saturday, April 18, 2009.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Pape Funeral Home, 10 E. Williams, Danville, IL 61832 with Rev. Mark Keyser officiating. Visitation will be from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at Pape's. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Greater Illinois Chapter, 4709 Golf Road, Suite 1015, Skokie, IL. Burial will be private.

Gladys was born April 23, 1917, in Danville, to Herbert O. and Lillian M. Leinhardt Evans. She graduated from DHS in 1935. She graduated from St. Elizabeth's School of Nursing in 1938. After marriage and raising her two sons, she volunteered at Lake View (Provena United Medical Center) accumulating more than 2,000 hours. She was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church in Danville, the Ladies Circle and very active in earlier years at the church. She greatly enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, especially Sunday afternoon dinners of roast beef at her home.

Gladys married H. Earl Mains on Sept. 28, 1939, in Danville by the Rev. Clyde Stanley. Her husband preceded her in death on Aug. 28, 1998. Survivors include a son: Michael Mains of Danville; a daughter-in-law: Nancy Mains of Decatur; four grandchildren: Tina (David) Ammermann of Danville, Tonya Mains of Plainfield, Ind., Travis (Debbie) Mains of Danville and John Mains of Charlotte, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Ammermann, Morgan and Mackenzie Mains, all of Danville; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Jordan and Austin Anderson. Also surviving is one sister, Betty Deichmiller of Cape May, N.J. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, one son, John Patrick, her daughter-in-law, Sharon, her parents and three brothers.
