Arthur was the son of Lloyd and Mildred Dieffenbacher. His father was a bookkeeper.

Arthur was a graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas. He graduated in May 1932; a photo of his graduating class appeared in The Dallas Morning News on May 8, 1932. He was identified as being from Erie, Pennsylvania. He went to China as a missionary. He later went to Harbin, Manchuria, but was forced to leave due to war conditions. He returned to the United States and attended Faith Theological Seminary in Wilmington, Delaware. He received his Master's Degree and then went into the Army chaplaincy.

First Lt. Arthur J. Dieffenbacher was killed in action by German artillery fire in France. He was the first graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary to be killed in action in World War II.
