Death: 1882

Wilson Bellis, who was an early settler in Holmes County, Ohio, where he married Margaret Schamp; and by this union were twelve children, eleven of whom lived to maturity: James J., John, Mary A., Adam, Amy, Dilly, George, John W., Catherine, Charity, Henry and William L. Mr. Bellis removed to Page County in 1858, and settled in Fremont township on section 4; later he moved to section 18, where he resided until the day of his death, and where his widow now makes her home. He was one of the oldest pioneers, coming to the county when it was a wilderness, thus forming one of the phalanx of noble frontiersmen, who made Iowa what it is today, one of the finest States in the Union. The people of his township testified their confidence in him by calling him to fill the office of trustee, the duties of which he discharged to their satisfaction. He was a life-long Democrat." pp. 260-261: Wilson Bellis served on the Board of Supervisors of Page County representing
Fremont Twp. in 1865, 1866 and 1870.

NOTE:
There are alot of families named Bellis, Schamp, and Sigler in the Hunterdon, New Jersey area. And again, I haven't found a marriage record for them, but there are plenty of marriages between the Bellis, Schamp, and Sigler families.

The reason I mention Sigler is because ON THAT SAME 1850 Census PAGE are listed Wilson's sisters, Mary (Bellis) Sigler and her husband George Sigler, and Amy (Bellis) Sigler and her husband William Hensen Sigler (and all of their kids).Whereas, Wilson moved his family from Indiana to Iowa, George and Mary (Bellis) Sigler moved their family from Indiana to Leroy, McLean County, Illinois (that's where they are buried). And although William Hensen and Amy (Bellis) Sigler stayed in Jay County, Indiana themselves (i.e. they're buried there), some of their kids follow Uncle George to McLean County, Illinois. Sometime when you're bored, go check out Gilmore Cemetery, near Leroy.

Another interesting bit of trivia is that the early Rockefellers are also from Hunterdon, New Jersey and there are Bellis' and Sigler's in the Rockefeller tree. (Without chasing down the precise details, I'm ballparking Wilson, Mary, and Amy Bellis as somewhere around third cousins to John D. Rockefeller.

MRS. MARGARET BELLIS
Mrs. Margaret Bellis, one of the old citizens of near this place died Tuesday, November 3, 1908, having been poorly for some time. She was 88 years old and her body was well weighed down by her many years. She has lived here for 25 years and was a member of the Methodist Church. She was the mother of eleven children and had 35 grandchildren and had the honor of having 196 great-grandchildren and three great great grandchildren, an achievement few women attain. She had made her home for some time with her daughter, Mrs. Levi Franks and it was at her home that she died. Her funeral was conducted by Rev. C. S. Banley of Shenandoah, Iowa, today at 11 o'clock assisted by a quartet consisting of Dr. and Mrs. Kibrey and wife, Dr. Swanson and Mrs. May Daniel. The remains were to be buried in the Essex Cemetery.
Information found in the Shenandoah World, November 7, 1908.
