Phillip Grant Wood, 85, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 1:05 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2007, at Great River Medical Center -- Klein Center in Burlington.

Born December 31, 1921 in Centerville, Iowa, he was the son of George W. and Lucille Jane Wells Wood. On December 16, 1946 he married Dortha Beatrice Sweeden in Centerville.

Mr. Wood attended Centerville High School. He was an Army Veteran of World War II serving from October of 1939 until January of 1946 and achieving the rank of technical sergeant and serving in the 10th Mountain Infantry (ski troops). He was a traffic control operator for Burlington Northern Railroad for 33 years. Mr. Wood was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church, Lifetime member of VFW Post 9162 where he served as Chaplin for 12 years. He enjoyed snow skiing, model railroading, trains, Big Band music, golf, and loved cats.

His parents and sister preceded him in death.

Dortha Wood
Dortha Beatrice Wood, 77, of Burlington, died at 10:45 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2007, at Great River Medical Center Klein Center in Burlington.


Born Oct. 9, 1930, in Centerville, she was the daughter of Paul and Faye Farris Sweeden. On Dec. 16, 1946, she married Phillip Grant Wood in Centerville. He died Sept. 21, 2007.

Mrs. Wood worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 16 years, retiring in 1983. She worked at the Flint Hills Club and Schramms as a telephone operator.

She was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church, the VFW Post 9162 ladies auxiliary and the Bunco Club. She enjoyed cats and daytrips with her husband.

Survivors include two sons, Craig Wood of Cedar Rapids and Steven Wood of Flagler Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Paula Mehaffy of Burlington and Peggy Wilkinson of Iowa City; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Sweeden of Burlington and Sam Sweeden of Niles, Mich.; and nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

There will be no visitation.

The funeral for Mrs. Wood will be 10 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with Coulter Wood officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.

A memorial has been established for Great River Medical Center Klein Center.
