Research Notes: Husband - Charles B. SCOLES

Records are scarce on Charles. He is listed as a child in the census of
Vandalia County in 1870 and 1880. His place of birth is shown as Illinois
No census is available for 1990, and he is not listed in the 1900 census.
Since one daughter was born in 1898 in Jackson Tenn, and another in
Vandalia, Illinois in 1902, he could have been in Tenn. in 1900. His
marriage to Mary L. Hubard is listed in the Fayette County register of
Marriages. His birth year is not certain since the 1870 census lists him
as 7 mo. old, indicating he was born in Dec., 1869, while the 1880 census
lists him as 12 yrs old indicating that he was born after June, 1867 or
before June, 1868, and yet his marriage registry lists him as 24 yrs. old
in November, 1894, indicating a birthday after Nov. 1, 1869 or before
November, 1870.

The Chester County, Tennessee Census of 1900 lists Charles with his wife
Mary L.; two daughters, Maimie (Sp ?) and Mary J.; and his younger sister,
Linnie. That census lists him as being born in January,1864, which throws
more confusion on his birthdate. In that census he is listed as being a
"tie maker". It is logical to assume that the ties referred to are
railroad ties. Since his oldest daughter is listed as born in Illinois in
Jan., 1896, and the next daughter, Mary Jane, was born in Tenn. in Jan.
1998, they went from Illinois in 1896 or 1897. The next daughter, Avesta
Lorene was born in Oct., 1900, and the 1910 Yell County Arkansas census
lists her as being born in Tennessee, although she insisted she was born
in Vandalia, Ill. It is more likely that she was born in Tenn. and the
family then moved to Arkansas before the birth of the first son, Willard
Emerson in March, 1903.

Neither Charles or the older daughter appear in the 1910 Arkansas census,
and the other three children were in the household of their mother and
stepfather, William Watkins. No record of Charles has been found in
Arkansas, but it is logical to assume that he died in Arkansas in early
1900's. The Eldest daughter, Maimie, must have died in Tennessee, shortly
after 1900 or in Arkansas shortly after they arrived there.

Research Notes: Wife - Mary Louella (Lou) HUBBARD

Birth year is concluded from the marriage record of Fayette County, Ohio.
She was shown as 15 yrs. old when married. No record of her has been found
in the available census data in Illinois. Her family apparently came from
South Carolina to Tennessee thence to Illinois.

She may have been born in either 1879 or 1880, but she was not listed in
The Fayette County, IL census of 1880 which listed her brother William as
two years old with the parents.

In the 1900 census of Chester County, Tennessee, she was listed as born in
June, 1879, which seems to be relatively consistent.
