Former Valley rancher dies
Joseph Ramsey Hewitt Jr., 73, a former Platte Valley rancher, died June 19, at his home in Palo Alto California.
Funeral services were held in Palo Alto Tuesday. Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, June 29 at the Saratoga Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Scott officiating.
Mr. Hewitt was born in Denver, September 21, 1907, the son of Joseph Ramsey Hewitt and Elizabeth Davis Hewitt, pioneers of the Platte Valley. He attended elementary and high school in Saratoga, and later was graduated from Lawrenceville School. He attended Yale University.
On September 27, 1930, he was married to Polly Oakley in Trenton NJ. Mr. and Mrs. Hewitt celebrated their 50th anniversary last fall.
Mr. Hewitt was the president of the Essex Company, for many years in Trenton NJ. In 1947 he purchased the Elk Hollow Ranch and later the Rainbow Ranch, the Brady Benson Place, and the Virgil Aydelott ranch. Mr. Hewitt was one of the first breeders of Charolais cattle in Wyoming. He was elected a director several times for the American Charolais Association and was also a member of the Wyoming Stockgrowers Association.
In 1969 Mr. and Mrs. Hewitt retired to Denver. They moved to Palo Alto California last year.
Mr. Hewitt is survived by his wife, Polly Oakley Hewitt; a daughter, Mrs. H. Standish Thayer of Palisades NY, a son, Dr. Oakley Hewitt of Palo Alto, California; a sister, Mrs. Kenneth P. Day of Saratoga; a niece, Gay Day Alcorn; two nephews, Henry and Robert Hewitt and five grandchildren.
