FELL TO HIS DEATH
Dean Crook Hurt Friday Morning, Died Saturday
Dean Crook, well known in Mitchell, grandson of Mrs. J. V. Smith, and for a long time employed as electrician at the Lehigh Portland Cement Plant, but later in the employ of the Southern Indiana Traction Co., received a fall Friday from the effects of which he died Saturday afternoon.
The remains were brought here Monday forenoon and the funeral held from the Baptist Church, after which the remains were buried in the Mitchell Cemetery.
Dean made friends wherever he went and had a happy faculty of adjusting himself to whatever his surroundings. He was handy at anything and cheerful in all things. We do not remember ever seeing him out of humor and do not know that he had an enemy.
He was always at work and had a pretty fair knowledge of electricity, having worked some time on our telephone system in its early days. We very much lament this sad accident. He leaves a wife and four children, who certainly have the sympathy of all, in this their sorest affliction.
The folowing account of the accident we take from the Louisvile Herald Saturday morning:
Dean Crook, residing at 32 Fifth Street, New Albany, was probably fatally injured in Jeffersonville yesterday morning by falling from a ladder and striking the back of his head against a stone. His head was split open and his right arm fractured.
The injured man, who has a wife and four children, is at the Deaconess Hospital, in Jeffersonville, where he is being attended by Dr. E. R. Perry, of New Albany, Dr. W. O. Roberts, of Louisville, Dr. D. C. Peyton, Dr. Marshall Varble and Dr. J. H. Baldwin, of Jeffersonville.
Crook is employed by the Louisville and Southern Indiana Traction Company as an electrician, and he was putting up a trolley hanger at Tweflth and Spring Streets. He was on a ladder and his foot slipped, causing him to be precipated backward and headforemost to the ground.
The unconscious man was placed on an interurban car and conveyed to the office of the United Gas and Electric Company, where the five physicians named were hastily summoned. They had him removed to the Deaconess Hospital, and the most powerful tonics, hypodermically administered, were resorted to in order to revive him.
Late yesterday evening the physicians performed an operation on the injured man, raising the depressed bones, but there is hardly one chance in a thousand for his recovery.
Mrs. Crook went to Jeffersonville and, finding the serious nature of the injuries her husband had sustained, sent for the four children, who will remain at his bedside.

He was replacing a trolly wire when he fell. Crooks formerly worked here some and is a brother-in-law of Herman Bartlett, of this city, his wife and Mr. Bartlett's wife being sisters.
Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett went to New Albany to see him. He was still alive this afternoon.

Dean Crooks* Sustains Fracture of His Skull
Dean Crooks*, a lineman in the employ of the Louisville and Southern Indiana Traction Company, who lives on East Fifth Street, was fatally injured by a fall from a ladder at the crossing of the Interurban line and the Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern railroad at 10 o'clock this morning.
He was taken to the office of the company in Jeffersonville where he was attended by Dr. ?. R. Perry. It was ascertained that he had sustained a fracture of the base of his skull and at last accounts he was in a dying condition.
Crooks* is thirty years of age and has a family.

Crooks was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge at Seymour.
He was the first employee in the electrical department of the traction company to meet death by accident.

Fatal Fall from A Telephone Pole.

Word was received here that Dean Crook, of New Albany, fell from a telephone pole at Jeffersonville, Friday, and sustained injuries which resulted in his death. He was repairing a telephone line and fell about twenty feet. The accident was caused by his shoes having snow on the soles, which caused him to slip. The funeral was held at Mitchell, Monday. His wife was Miss Hattie Wayman, formerly of this place, and is well known here. She and her four children have the sympathy of many Medora friends.

Former Local Woman Dies at Tampa, Flordia
Mrs. Charles McBride, 72, a former resident of Seymour, died late Tuesday night at the home of her son, J. D. Crooke, also a former resident of Seymour, 4409 West Buffalo Street, Drew Park, Tampa, Flordia. She had been ill since November, and her condition had been critical for several days. Her death occurred on her seventy-second birthday.
Mrs. McBride was born at Medora, the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Wayman, of Medora. She attended school at Medora and was widely known throughout the county. While residing in Seymour, she was a member of the First Baptist Church and of the Loyal Daughters class of the First Baptist Sunday School. She left here about ten years ago to make her home in Flordia. A host of friends in Seymour and vicinity mourn her death.
Survivors include five children; Evelyn, James and Florence, all of Tampa, Flordia; Lawrence, of New Castle and Mrs. Hubert Hart, of Seymour; two brothers, William Wayman, of Seymour and C. M. Wayman, of Brownstown; Three sisters, Mrs. J. H. Bartlett and Mrs. Frank Roemmel, both of Seymour, and Mrs. B. F. Beeler, of Martinsville, VA. Three children, George, Mary and Mrs. Don Cooper, preceded her in death.
Her daughter, Mrs. Hart, her sister, Mrs. Bartlett, both of Seymour, and her son, Lawrence Henderson, of New Castle, left Sunday for Tampa, because of her serious illness.
Funeral services will be conducted at Tampa, probably Thursday.

Mrs. Charles McBride Sister Of Brownstown Man, Dies In Flordia
Funeral services were held Thursday at Tampa, Flordia, for Mrs. Charles McBride, native of Medora, and sister of C. M. Wayman, of Brownstown, who died May 6, at the home of her son, James D. Crooke, Drew Park, Tampa, Flordia. She had been ill since early in the winter and her condition had been critical for the past week.
She was seventy-two years old the day of her death.
Mrs. McBride was a daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Wayman, of Medora, and attended the Medora schools. She was a resident of Seymour for a number of years, leaving there about ten years ago to reside in Flordia.
Surviving are five children: Evelyn, James and Florence, all living in Tampa, Lawrence Crooke*(sic), of New Castle and Mrs. Hubert Hart, of Seymour; two brothers, William Wayman, of Seymour, C. M. A secret marriage has just come to light which was solmonized the 2nd Sunday* in last June, the contracting parties were Mr. Guy Lewis, of Columbus, and Miss Hattie Wayman, of this place. Miss Wayman some six weeks ago went to Cincinnati to visit relatives, while there she wrote to her parents and disclosed the secret. She took the train from that city, the 29th of October for Mt. Carmil**(sic), IL, to join her husband, who lately moved there with his parents. They will make their home at Mt. Carmil(sic). They have the best wishes of a host of friends for a happy future.
