Donald A. Cook, 89, of Cortland, passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 in the Cortland Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 4, 1921, on a large family farm in Taylor, New York, the son of Arthur L. and Vera A. Foster Cook. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Beulah in 1977, sister Norma L. Allen, and brothers Laurence F. and Francis L. Cook.

Don graduated from Cincinnatus Central School in 1939. As a young man, he loved to play baseball and softball and was an outstanding pitcher. He also worked setting pins at the bowling alley in Cincinnatus and became an avid bowler.

In 1945, he married Beulah Ursula Yocum. They had three daughters, Sandra, Alice and Avis. After the passing of his sister Norma, they became guardians of her daughter, Mary; so then they had four daughters.

In the course of his life, Don operated his own dairy farm for many years, was a certified milk tester for the DHIC, and operated his own trucking and lawn care business. He was active for many years in the Homer Baptist Church, serving as a deacon and working with the Boys' Brigade.

He is survived by his daughters, Sandra K. Cook, Alice M. Lake, Avis I. Warner, and Mary D. (Philip) Olsen; 13 grandchildren, Brian J. (Loni) Donahue, Heather M. (Val) Donahue, Dennis L. (Chrissy) Howe, Derek C. (Tammy) Howe, Angela M. (Jim) Maxsween, Michael D. (Carrie) Lake, Daniel M. (Jennifer) McConnell, Donald H. (Tracey) McConnell, Dennis J. (Rachel) Leonard, Tessa M. (Ben) Call, Kirsten A. (Tim) Spickler, Katrina L. (Mike) Frymier, Kerri L. (Shawn) Patton; many much loved great-grandchildren; a niece and three nephews; and his beloved cat, Susie.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 3, 2010 from 11:00 AM – noon at the Donald L. Barber Funeral Home, 5016 N. Main St., Homer. A memorial service will follow, words of comfort will be offered by Pastor John Hartman. Interment, at the convenience of the family, will be in Cincinnatus Cemetery.
