John Conger is one of two Mexican War veterans who are buried in this cemetery. The other is Daniel Horton.

Enlisted 18 Jun 1846 at New Albany, IN, as a Corporal. Capt Dunn commanded the company and both he and John Conger were residents of Lawrenceburg, IN, at the time. He mustered out with the unit on 27 Jun 1847 in New Orleans.

He kept a journal of his military service during the Mexican War. The full text was published in "The Conger Family of America" by Maxine Crowell Leonard.

The 168th was a 100-day regiment. He enlisted on 2 May 1864 and was mustered out with the unit on 8 Sep 1864.

Ohio mustered in 35,000 National Guardsmen in May 1864 for 100 days' service. These units were generally assigned to "safe" areas - guarding railroads and bridges, etc. Regardless, many of these units saw combat - including the 168th, which lost 11 men killed or mortally wounded. In fact, these Ohio 100-days men were credited with stopping the capture of Washington DC.

He married Corinthia Jane Palmerton on 23 Feb 1849 in Dearborn County, IN. They had 4 children: Rolla, Wayne, Cora and Robert. Sources show that Corinthia died on 26 Nov 1867; burial location not documented.
