H. G. CONGER DIES ON ROAD TO IOWA CITY
Had Been seriously Ill - But Short Time—Was to Have Had Operation This Week
While being: hurried to the State Hospital at Iowa City for an operation yesterday afternoon by his daughter, Mrs. D. O. Johnson and Mr. Johnson of this city, Halleck Geddis Conger, age 70, died en route. His death occurred at 2:10 p. m. and the car, in which he was being taken reached the hospital at 2:30.
Mr. Conger was practically a life long resident of Appanoose county and news of his death comes as a shock to a wide circle of friends and relatives. Sympathy is also extended to Mrs. Johnson, who made every effort to save her father.
Mr. Conger was born January 17, 1863, in Monroe county and moved with his parents to Appanoose county when five years of age. The elder Congers settled on a farm on the Centerville-Cincinnati road. It was there that Mr. Conger grew to manhood and united in marriage with Ella McCollum, Feb 6, 1886. The couple lived on a farm for a time and 25 years ago moved to Centerville after which Mr. Conger engaged in county road work, in which he was active for a great many years.
There were seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Conger, five of which survive as follows: Fred P. of Wagner, S. Dak., Mrs. Frank Glick of Abbington, Ill., Clyde Conger of Arkansas, Mrs. C. F. Burneson of Paduka, Kentucky, and Mrs. D. O. Johnson of this city. One sister also survives, and is Mrs. Lewis Phillips of Billings, Mont.
Mrs. Conger preceded her husband in death three years ago, July 9, and since that time he had made his home with Mrs. Johnson. The body lies in state at the Miller funeral home and funeral announcements will be made later.
