James L. Cliver, 62, a long time resident of Santa Rita, passed away at his home in Turnerville Monday morning after an extended illness. He was born at Terra Haute, Ind, where his father died during his early boyhood. Following his fathers death, he and his mother came to Clayton, N. Mex. in 1910 where she published the Clayton Gazette for many years.

He attended the public schools of Clayton and then went to New Mexico Military Institute at Roswell where he graduated in 1917 as a Second Lieutenant In the U. S. Army. After special training at Treasure Island, San Francisco, he was assigned as an Instructor in the Army Electronics School at Fort Logan, Denver where he continued until 1919 when he received his discharge from military service.

Mr. Cliver became an employee in the Electrical Department of Chino Mines at Hurley in 1925 and later transferred to the Electrical Department at Santa Rita.

He married Miss Dave Cook in Santa Rita in 1928 and they have made their home there ever since. He was active in politics and served on precinct, county and state committees of the Democratic party. He was also a member of Santa Rita Lodge No. 44 of Masons. He was a member of the Camp Thunderbird Committee for several years and had a large part in the initial construction of the Lodge, the water development facility, for the camp as well as the power plants. He continued on the committee until failing health necessitated his resignation, but he never lost interest in the youth of the community. Survivors are his wife and a brother. Robert Q. Palmer, chief of the civil works branch of the U. S. Army Engineers District of the Hawaiian Islands.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Community Church In Santa Rita with the Rev. Harold K. Johnson conducting the services. Interment was in the Masonic Cemetery in Silver City. The Santa Rita Masons held the graveside services. Pallbearers were George Barrows, Bartley McDonald, H. K. Chaney, H. J. Nunn, Forrest Delk and Arvil Waggoner. Nelson Funeral Home In Las Cruces was in charge of the arrangements.
