He married Mary Margaret Newbury Latham in 1866 and they established a farm in Texas and had nine children. The seven surviving children were William H, Clerinda, Samuel, Joseph, A Dudley, Hick and Dora A.

William J. is the son of Valsane Gaylove Latham and Nancy nee WOLVERTON Latham.

William James first married Patsy nee CLAYTON in 1854 in Maries Co., MO. To this union were born these known children: Valsane Gaylove and Nancy Elizabeth Latham.
