Dalton L. Woolverton, a lifelong resident of New Orleans, died Wednesday Nov. 23, 2016 at University Hospital after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 78 years old. Dalton is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Marilyn Ciaccio Woolverton; sons Gregory (Stephanie Riegel), Douglas (Jeremy Chen), David (Elizabeth Bowman), and Stephen; and grandchildren Allison, Madeleine, and Michael Woolverton, and Peter Dalton Woolverton. Other survivors include: brothers Nicholas Woolverton, III (Nina) and Paul Woolverton (Emily), and sister Lois Bollinger (Raymond). He is preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas W. Woolverton, Jr. and Mandevilla Viosca Woolverton. Dalton was the consummate gentleman, known for his warm, generous spirit and his love of life. He was never happier than when surrounded by his family. He was an avid genealogist and student of New Orleans history, and enjoyed pouring over the genealogy records of family and friends-almost as much as he enjoyed Mardi Gras parades, Carnival Balls and lunch among friends at one of the downtown dining clubs of which he was a member. He was a devoted father and grandfather and was adored by his family and many friends. He was a member of Transfiguration of Our Lord Catholic Church. Dalton was a graduate of De La Salle High School and Tulane University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He also received a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tulane and a Master's in Business Administration from Loyola University. He began his career in the early-1960s as a research engineer at the Boeing Company, where he worked on the Saturn V rocket booster. He went on to join J. L. Rumold Inc. Mechanical Contractors, which he later expanded into general contracting. He was a longtime director of State Investors Bank. He also taught in the Tulane University School of Engineering and, later, the University of New Orleans Engineering School. During his career, Dalton was involved in several professional organizations, including: Louisiana Associated General Contractors, the National Society of Professional Engineering, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of several civic and historical organizations including: The Louisiana Genealogical and Historical Society, Save Our Cemeteries, Friends of the Cabildo board of directors, Friends of the UNO Library, Tulane Alumni Association board of directors, Society of the War of 1812, Society of the Founders of the City of New Orleans, Military Order of Foreign Wars, and Sons of the Revolution in Louisiana. He was also a member of the Southern Yacht Club and several carnival organizations. Dalton's family wishes to express their appreciation to his kind, capable and selfless caregivers of the past several years: Nichelle Carter, Marisa McDaniels, Terry Wilson and Wanda Troulliet. Visitation will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, at Lake Lawn Cemetery, followed by a funeral mass at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Metairie Cemetery.
