According to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in the Garden of Honor of this cemetery, John was killed in action in Vietnam. However, I could not locate his name on the Vietnam War Memorial Washington, D.C.

The reason for this inconsistency is that John was one of 43 passengers killed when a military transport plane crashed after take off from a military base in Taiwan. Due to heavy cloud cover, the pilot was solely using his instrument panel and didn't quite clear a nearby mountain ridge. All on board perished.
