Virginia was born to Fred and Gladys Layer, on Nov. 4, 1924.

She had one brother, Fred Edward Layer.

Virginia attended elementary and high school in Terre Haute. She worked as a dental assistant for several Terre Haute dentists while supporting her husband through dental school. Then after her husband, Dr. Daniel Cheek, graduated from dental school, Virginia joined Dr. Cheek and together they practiced dentistry in Terre Haute for more than 50 years.

Dr. Daniel Check and Virginia's romance began during World War II. As Daniel was walking into a dance party dressed in his naval aviator uniform, Daniel caught Virginia's eye. She told her friends she didn't know their plans, but she would be attending the dance. She did and Daniel and Virginia were married for more than 60 years until Daniel's death in 2008.

Daniel and Virginia enjoyed spending time with family and friends. They were members of the Elks Lodge of Terre Haute and as members of Ambassadaire Travel Club, traveled to Europe and the Caribbean.

Her nieces, Marsha Layer of Fayetteville, Ark., and Karen Bernardi of Boulder, Colo.; and great-niece Nova Everson Phlugg of Costa Rica; and dear friend and the person Virginia called her sister, Josephine Layer-Taylor, are thankful for Virginia's life. They knew her as a fun, generous lady with just enough sass to keep life interesting.

Virginia has been laid to rest in Boulder. If you would like to celebrate the life of Virginia Cheek the family has requested that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Humane Society of Terre Haute in honor of Virginia's great love for animals.
