Chaplain

Richard K. Titley

January 31, 1923-

May 22, 2011

Chaplain Richard K. Titley, Retired USN, 88, passed away at Granite Farms Estates Retirement Community in Media, PA on May 22, 2011.

Richard (Dick) was born in Newark, New Jersey on January 31, 1923 to Elsie Choate Titley and Ralph H. Titley of Springfield, New Jersey, where he spent his childhood. This is where he began his lifelong love of "tinkering". With his father's assistance he learned to become a master carpenter and his creative talents developed in any area he desired to "tinker". He and his wife took a "swamp" in Virginia Beach and turned it into a lovely home complete with a very large pond with a view of the Chesapeake Bay. At this site he learned how to do plumbing, carpentry, electricity and brick laying while working full time for the US Navy. His hobbies were many from learning to tailor suits, photography, furniture building, renovating and maintaining a 30 foot sailboat loaned to him for ten years, completely restoring an antique MG, to name a few of his " tinkerings".

Dick received his BA from Penn State University in 1944 and his Masters of Divinity from Drew University in 1948. He was an ordained United Methodist minister of the Pennsylvania and Florida Conferences. He married his college sweetheart, Margaret (Peggy) Campbell, who predeceased him in 2006 after 61 years of a loving marriage.

Dick's first church appointment was to the Picture Rocks Circuit of the United Methodist Church which included 4 churches of the Sunbury District of the Central PA Conference in 1945. In 1949 he moved his young family to Jacksonville, Florida where he founded the Ocean Roads Methodist Church. His love of the sea led him to join the United States Navy in September 1951 as a Lieutenant J. G. and retired in July 1977 as a full Commander. He served on numerous ships, including the aircraft carrier, USS Bennington in 1953, USS Holland in 1964-1966, a submarine tender, in Rota, Spain and the hospital ship, USS Repose during his assignment in Viet Nam in 1968. He served with the United States Marine Corps in Quantico, VA in 1957, Camp Lejeune, NC in 1960 and Cherry Point, NC in 1971. His service included two Navy Hospitals: Bethesda Medical Center in 1961-64 and the Philadelphia Navy Hospital in 1966. Throughout his Navy career he was stationed off and on in various Navy bases in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area, where he and his wife had built a beautiful home and lived during his final assignment at FCDSTCLANT, Dam Neck, VA. After he retired from the Navy in 1977, he moved to West Palm Beach, FL where he served as a chaplain at the Waterford Retirement Community. He retired once and for all in 1984 when he and Peggy moved into Azalea Trace Retirement Community in Pensacola, FL where they lived for 22 years.

Dick's 26 year career in the Navy is distinguished by his dedication to the service personnel he counseled and supported. While stationed at Philadelphia Naval Hospital he co-founded the skiing program for amputee Viet Nam Veterans, restoring their self-esteem and will to move on with their now changed lives. He was also responsible for establishing a Hobby Shop for Naval personnel at Bethesda Naval Medical Center. He was passionately dedicated to supporting the men and women of the Navy and Marines working many long hours to assist each and everyone he could. He even risked his own life to help the medical personnel in Viet Nam with the task of helping to prepare incoming wounded, exposing himself to Agent Orange which later led to the development of prostate cancer and multiple myeloma.

He is survived by his two daughters, Jane Titley Berkow (formerly Bishop) of Baltimore, MD and Donna L. Titley of Los Angeles, CA; his four grandchildren Christopher and Jonathan Bishop and Jenisha and Richard Hasselberger; one great-granddaughter, Ella Jane Bishop; two remaining siblings of four, William Titley of Maplewood, NJ, and Catherine Veninata of Port St. Lucie, FL.
