Graduated from Whitehall High School in 1933. Received a B.S. in Chemistry from Montana State College (Bozeman) in 1937. Received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1942. Worked for the duPont Company as a Research Chemist from 1942 to 1976. Inventor of Qiana, an artificial silk, and several dyes for textile fibers. Married his lab assistant, Esther Budzynski, on Jan. 31, 1948 in Buffalo, NY. Moved to Delaware in 1950. Member of Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church. Charter member of the Delmarva Ornithological Society (1962). Father of 4 children, Sharon Jane Speck, Shirley Diane Speck Swogger, Evan Carroll Speck and Eric Stanley Speck.

Esther Eleanor Marie (Budzynski) Speck died Wed., Nov. 5, 2014 at Regal Heights Nursing Home in Hockessin, Del. after a brief illness. She was born Aug. 19, 1924 in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of Jacob and Eleanor (Majchrzycki) Budzynski. Her first language was Polish, and “Estera Budzynska” graduated from the Polish-language Transfiguration Grammar School in 1938. Esther graduated in 1942 from East H.S. in Buffalo, N.Y., and in 1946 received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from the University of Buffalo. She went to work for E. I. duPont de Nemours & Co. in Buffalo as a laboratory assistant to Dr. Stanley Brooke Speck. They were married Jan. 31, 1948.

In 1950 DuPont’s relocation of research activities brought them to Wilmington , Del. Four children were born from 1949 to 1957. Esther taught kindergarten at Mrs. Burkholder's Pre-School on Milltown Road from 1964 to 1967. Esther and Stanley shared interests in bird watching and bridge playing. In retirement years they traveled around the country on birding trips, with the highlight being a 1988 trip to Alaska. They were members of the Delmarva Ornithological Society, which presented Esther with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. Esther was also an amateur watercolorist. Esther was a member of Lower Brandywine Presbyterian Church.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents, grandsons Jacob and Jared Swogger, brother Edmund in 1966, husband Stanley in 2004, and sister Alice Touris on August 16 of this year. Esther is survived by brother-in-law Paul Touris of Hamburg, N.Y., sister-in-law Virginia Speck of Missoula, Mont., children Sharon Speck of Helena, Mont., Shirley Swogger of Miles City, Mont., Dr. Evan Speck of Evansville, Ind., and Eric Speck of Lexington Park, Md., 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren (a third expected in February), and several nieces and nephews.
