1STLT US MARINE CORPS
WORLD WAR II
Edwin F. "Kally" Kallenberg, Jr., age 88, died Thursday June 11, 2009 at his home in Austin.
Kally was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on August 9, 1920, the first son of Dr. Edwin and Thelma Graham Kallenberg. In 1934 the Kallenbergs moved to Union City, Tennessee where Kally spent his teen years. The tall, redheaded "yank" quickly gained respect with the Tennessee crowd as a standout receiver on the championship 1937 UCHS football team. At this time Kally also met and courted the love of his life, Jane Bratton.
He attended the University of Iowa before earning an appointment to the US Naval Academy, where his many friends called him "red dog" as their 4-year curriculum was condensed into 3 unbroken years at the outbreak of WWII. June 9, 1943 was a big day for Kally; he graduated from the USNA, was commissioned as a US Marine officer, and married his Janie.
As a US Marine, 1st Lieutenant Kallenberg served in the Pacific theatre, including the invasion of Leyte and the repatriation of the Philippine Islands.
Soon after the war he returned to Union City and started a family. The Kallenbergs were active members of the First Christian Church, and in 1954 Kally was elected Union City's Young Man of the Year. A career change took him to St. Louis in 1963 where he worked for the National Benevolent Association, and subsequently to Texas where he worked for TCU and Brite Divinity as the Director of Deferred Giving.
Kally and Jane celebrated their retirement in Texas and Kentucky, where they enjoyed gardening, traveling in their motor home and entertaining their many friends and family. They shared a life-long passion for dancing and from ballroom to living room, Kally and Jane never missed a step.
