Ruth B. Bridwell (1925 - 2009) On Wednesday, in the early morning hours, the Lord called Ruthie B home. In her usual graceful fashion, she left in a dream, eyes closed, and a smile on her face. She went to join those that had preceded her: Mother, Oleta Laverne Shull Bowman Gray; Step-Father, R.C. "Nick" Gray; Father, Oran Lincoln Bowman; Step-Mother Kate Rolan Bowman; Sister, Wanda Ann Bowman Khan; Husband, Herbert Arrington Bridwell; and Son, Thomas Andrew Bridwell.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Stumpff Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Robert Hamm officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of the Stumpff Funeral Home and Crematory.
A memorial has been established in honor of Mrs. Ruth B. Bridwell and contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association located at 6465 S. Yale Ave., Suite 312, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74136-7804.
She left many behind to carry on her good works: John Glenn Bridwell and his wife, Jeri Lynne Fink Bridwell of Garland, TX., Daughters, Susan Elaine Bridwell Bonnett, of Bartlesville, OK, Nita Joyce Bridwell, of Dallas, TX, and Daughter-in-law Mary Rule Tullos Bridwell, of Houston, TX.
Grandchildren include Kimberlee Nicole Bridwell Dantone and husband, Todd Dantone, of Pasadena, TX; Ellen Fuente Maples and husband, Jeff Maples, of Pflugerville, TX; Todd Bridwell and wife, Rebecca York Bridwell, of Beaumont, TX; Justin Glenn Bridwell and wife, Kathryn Thalacker Bridwell, of Ft Drum, NY; Jewel Ruth Bridwell Ybarra, and husband, Albert Ybarra ,of Leander, TX; and Joseph Patrick Bonnett, of Bartlesville, OK. She also has 4 great-grandchildren, numerous cousins, and nieces and nephews.
Ruth was born November 8, 1925, in Dewey, OK., where she grew up and played the clarinet in the Dewey Bulldogs Marching Band. She attended the Oklahoma A&M College, later to become Oklahoma State University, where she graduated in 1951 with a BS degree in Home Economics. She met and married her true love, Herbert A. Bridwell, there in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he was tossed into Theta Pond for proposing to her! While in Stillwater, they raised chickens as well as Andy and Nita. Herb finally graduated with his Masters in Education and they set off for Bartlesville.
After moving to Bartlesville, OK, Herb worked at Phillips Petroleum and Ruth tried her hand at being a homemaker. She didn't much like that and was influential in getting Denton's Fashion Center started in October 1955, at 400 S Johnstone. There, they supported various Miss Oklahoma beauty contestants and wished Boots Adams many "Happy Birthday" salutations. They had many luncheons at the Burlingame Hotel and many Friday afternoons at The J Bar. Life was grande in those good old days!
When they both decided to slow down, they exchanged the retail life of Denton's Fashion Center for the life of the inn keeper: not one but two inns. One on the east side of town, and one on the west side of town. Did I say slow down? That was not in their vocabulary. Should you and I be surprised? But now she has slowed down, has joined the angels in heaven and is now watching over us. GLORIOUS!
