Samuel Cliver, one of the earliest pioneer residents of Terre Haute, died at 12:30 o'clock Thursday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William E. McLean, 700 South Seventh street. He was 81 years old. Mr. Cliver was born in Ohio and came to Indiana, with his parents, in 1840. Thirteen years later he settled in Terre Haute and had lived here continuously since that time. During his active life, Mr. Cliver was engaged in the contracting business, in which he occupied a prominent place. He had been retired for several years. The decedent is survived by a son. Edwin B. Cliver of Oxford, O. and two daughters, Mrs. William E. McLean and Mrs. Mary C. (May) Dodson. He was a Odd Fellow and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Funeral arrangements have not been made.

FIRST DEATHS ARE RECORDED IN HEAT WAVE

Man and Woman Succumb After Day of High Temperatures Registered Here Sunday.

Mrs. Louise Cliver is Second Victim Dying Late at Night After Day of Suffering Because of Heat

Two deaths as the result of the terrific heat wave which has vent its wrath on Terre Haute were reported Monday. The victims were Mrs. Louise Cliver, wife of Samuel Cliver, 700 South Seventh street, who died at 10 o'clock Sunday night, and Elmer Leslie, who succumbed to a heat stroke earlier in the evening.

Mrs. Cliver made her home with her daughter, Mrs. William E. McClain. She had been ill practically all day Sunday and Dr. S.M. Rice was called Sunday. He held death due to heat prostration. Another daughter, Mrs. May C. Dodson, of this city is visiting in Arizona and had been notified. A son Edwin lives in Oxford, O. The funeral probably will be held Thursday.
