Biography
Margaret "Peggy" B. Whitehill, 80, of Walnut Street, Emlenton, died peacefully Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011, at Reston Community Hospital in Reston, Va., following a brief illness.
Born Feb. 25, 1930, in Oil City, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Marie Marshall Bower.
Peggy graduated from Oil City High School in 1947. She attended Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, majoring in merchandising. After graduation she worked for U. S. Steel Oil Well Supply Company in Siverly, Oil City, until her marriage.
She married John D. Whitehill on June 14, 1952. He survives. Together they shared 58 years of marriage.
Through the years Peggy volunteered at the Oil City Hospital cafeteria and helped organize the American Cancer Society Annual Daffodil Sale and donation drive.
She was an active member in both St. Michael Roman Catholic Church in Emlenton and St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church in Oil City.
She and her husband were long-time members of the Emlenton Kiwanis, helping with scholarship fund-raising and the children's Bundle Up Program for the A-C Valley school children.
She enjoyed playing bridge and having lunch with her many friends.
An avid sports fan, she especially enjoyed watching her beloved Notre Dame teams, as well as attending the ballet and musical plays.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Amy Whitehill of Emlenton, Margaret Ann Collentro and her husband, Scott, of Groton, Mass., and Jane Russell and her husband, Dan, of Herndon, Va.; six grandchildren, John Collentro, Andy Collentro, Katherine "Kate" Collentro, David Russell, Joseph "Joey" Russell, and Margaret "Maggie" Russell; two cousins, Father Robert Bower and Ferdinand Bower, both of Edinboro; cousins Donald and Joyce Plumer of Oil City; brothers-in-law and sisters-inlaw, Cassius and Betty Whitehill of St. George, Utah, and Enid Spryn of Butler, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Peggy was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Lou Bower and Joan Bower Gonzalez, and a brother-inlaw, William "Bill" Gonzalez.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hile Funeral Home Inc., 1204 Kerr Ave. Emlenton.
Friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Reinsel Funeral Home & Crematory in Oil City.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday from St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church in Oil City with Father Matthew Ruyechan, church pastor, officiating.
Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Oil City.
Recitation of the Rosary will be at 5:45 p.m. Thursday rom the Hile Funeral Home Inc. in Emlenton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice
