US Army Major General. He graduated from West Point in 1887, and served in the Indian Wars before becoming Professor of Military Science at the University of North Dakota in 1893. He served in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and then served in Alaska and the Philippines. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College in 1909 and the Army War College in 1916, and then served on the Mexican border during the Villa Expedition. During World War I he commanded the Infantry School at Fort Sill and the 159th Infantry Brigade before commanding the 37th Division as a Major General. His division participated in the the Battle of Saint-Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne Offensive. After the war he commanded Camp Bowie, Texas, and then became the first Commandant of the Infantry School at Fort Benning. In 1920 he was appointed Chief of Infantry, and he served until retiring in 1925. In retirement he resided in Altadena, California, where he was a civic and local government activist, including serving on the Los Angeles County Planning Commission. His awards included the Distinguished Service Medal and Silver Star, France's Croix de Guerre and Legion of Honor, and Belgium's Order of Leopold.

Word has been received of the death of Major General Charles Stewart Farnsworth, 93, of Altedena, Calif.

Major Farnsworth lived in Clarion during his boyhood, and attended West Point Military Academy in the same class as "Blackjack" Pershing.

He was chief of the infantry from 1920 unti 1925, retiring from active service after 42 years with the Army.

During World War 1 he was in command of the Ohio National Guard in France.

He spent some time between his retirement and his death in Alaska."

Mrs. Helen B. Farnsworth

Word has been received here of the death, July 22, in Altadena, Calif., of Mrs. Helen Bosard Farnsworth, wife of Major General Charles S. Farnsworth, retired, former chief of infantry. She was buried at the presidio of San Francisco. Major General Farnsworth was a Clarion boy who will be remembered by some of the older members of the community.
