"Fourth oldest son Carleton Burroughs Matthews, age 20, enlisted on Oct. 23, 1861, as a private in Co. K 19th Infantry. He served as a drummer and was mustered out of service on June 2, 1863. On Dec. 23, 1863, he enlisted as a private in Co L 16th NY Artillery and was mustered out of service on Aug. 21, 1865. Carleton, born Dec. 21, 1840, married Hannah R. Bocker on Jan. 3, 1864. After the Civil War he lived in the town of Fayette and worked as a painter. By 1880, he lived in Auburn, where he was employed as a machinist."
