John was born near Sergeantsville in Kingwood NJ 3/4/1817; attended Lafayette College in Easton PA for one year; graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1844; practiced 5 years at Rosemont NJ; then engaged in manufacturing lumber in Fairfax County, VA, where he was Justice of the Peace, and afterward Judge of the County Courts; in 1872 started farming in York County...The Record of the Men of Lafayette, by Coffin, 1879.

"Dr. John W. Barcroft
Dr. John W. Barcroft, a brother of Mrs. F. B. Runk and uncle of Miss Emma T. B. Runk and a brother-in-law of Stacy B. Bray and Wilson Bray, of this city, died at his home in Arlington, Va., February 9th, aged 78 years. He was educated at Easton College. He was formerly a prominent physician of Rosemont, in this county, and for a time at Sergeantsville. He removed to Fairfax county, Virginia, before the war where he purchased a large farm and mill property near Washington, D.C. At the time of the battle of Bull Run his mills and house were burned.He afterward purchased the George Washington Custis mill property near the Arlington National Cemetery where he died. His age was about 75 years. He was a gentleman of fine attainments and of high personal character. Dr. John Wolverton, deceased, late of Trenton, studied medicine under him before he graduated. He leaves a wife, Lucinda, the eldest daughter of the late Sheriff Bray, of Kingwood. A son John resides in York county, Pa.; a daughter Mary married a gentleman near Alexandria, Va., by the name of Payne, and Carrie, his eldest daughter, is the wife of Hon. Gerard Brown, Senator from York county, Pa., one of the prominent men of that State.
