Raymond Chester Baker was born September 4, 1898 near Sutton in Clay County, Nebraska; the son of Samuel and Amanda Overturf. He was one of a family of 10 children. His education was in the elementary grades of Clay and Custer counties in Nebraska. When he became of age he took a homestead thirty-seven miles north of Douglas. He worked as a carpenter in California and in the harvest fields of grain and beets while proving up.
He was married to Lucille Cress August 22, 1925 at Eustis, Nebraska. After living in Nebraska a few years since homesteading he moved to Wyoming to his homestead in 1931. In 1941 he moved nearer to Douglas for the further education of his family, where he resided until his death.
He is survived by his wife of Douglas; five daughters, Shirley Jean Reed, Beverly Rae Chamberlain and Lucille Marjorie (Teil) Chamberlain, all of Douglas; Delores Lorranine Guthrie of Boone, Colorado and Sharon Patricia Quam of Woodland, Cal.; one brother, Ivan D. Baker of Callaway, Neb.; three sisters, Alda Bowman of Phoenix, Az., Nell Barnett of Oregon, and Hazel Latimer of Twin Falls, Id.; 25 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leonard and Leo; two sisters, Zella Lamb and Christine Gilbert.

Lucille Cress Baker, 104, a resident of rural Douglas, died Jan. 8, 2010 at her home. She was the daughter of William Litton and Carrie Ella (Lee) Cress. She was reared and educated in Sedalia, Mo., where she attended country and town schools. She moved to Nebraska in March 1920, then to Lipton, Mo., to finish high school, graduating in 1922. She spent some of 1924 in Kansas City, until she contracted scarlet fever. She moved back to Nebraska in February 1925. She was married to Raymond Chester Baker on Aug. 22, 1925 in Eustis, Neb. They continued to live near Callaway, Neb., before moving to Wyoming in 1931 to work on their homestead 37 miles north of Douglas. They moved to their current home five miles north of Douglas in 1942 for further education of their children. She resided at this home for 68 years. She is survived by five daughters, Shirley Jean Reed, Beverly Rae Chamberlain, Lucille Marjorie "Teil" Chamberlain and Sharon Patricia Quam, all of Douglas; and Delores Lorraine Gutherie of Pueblo, Colo.; 24 grandchildren; 84 great grandchildren; and 50 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Raymond on Nov. 18, 1983; nine siblings; one grandson; and one great-great granddaughter.
