from David Macdonald: existence is speculative, based on attempting to link Nathaniel Bailey Wolverton to Isaac Woolverton and Hannah Rose.
"The assumption that such a son existed is not unreasonable in that in 1797 a Bailey Wolverton married in Mansfield Township, Sussex County, and Isaac's family is the only [Woolverton] family known to have been living in or close to Mansfield Township at the time. The name Ezekiel? has been assigned because the name Ezekiel, which had not theretofore appeared in the Woolverton family, was to be found in the Rose family and then to be found in the family of Ezekiel?'s putative son, Nathaniel Bailey Wolverton.
If Ezekiel? named a son Bailey Woolverton who married in 1797, it is reasonable to suspect that Ezekiel?, probably born around 1759, married ? Bailey, perhaps around 1778.
Bailey may have been the middle name of the man who married in 1797. It was not uncommon for a man to be known by his middle name rather than his first name.
It seems likely that a number of Woolvertons in Wantage Township, Sussex County, New Jersey, and listed in the appendix [of Macdonald's book] on unidentified Woolvertons were descended from Ezekiel?'s father, as they cannot be placed in any other line, and it is perhaps relevant that on 1 December 1829 a Nathaniel W. Bailey married Arminda L. DeWitt in Wantage Townhship, Sussex County, This shows that the name Nathaniel was used in the Bailey family, although it is not known how early it was used, and the middle initial "W" holds out the possibility of a Woolverton ancestry.
The creation of the hypothetical Ezekiel? gives rise to the risk that the uncertainty of the hypothesis will be forgotten. The risk seems worth taking, however, in order to be able to deal with Nathaniel Bailey Wolverton's many descendants in the main body of the book rather than in Appendix D."
*** NOTE: essentially Macdonald found a loose end and was trying to find the best fit for this family. It is possible that this individual did not exist, and that Nathaniel was a descendant of a different line, but there is no proof of this yet either way. If he did exist, there is no certainty that his name actually was Ezekiel.
