Joyce Marie Sawyer was born in Penfield, New York on January 7, 1940 and died in Elgin, Texas on April 10, 2011. She was the middle of three children of Clyde and Bernice Sawyer. She was reared in Oxnard, California and graduated from Oxnard High School. Joyce Sawyer received the Bachelor of Science Degree from Northfield State College in California. Fifty years after graduating from high school, Joyce received the Master of Religious Studies degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 2007.
In her professional career, Joyce Sawyer taught in elementary public schools, and in the Adult Education program of the Oxnard Public School System where her field was teaching English as a second language.
After her children were grown and she married her last husband, Les Fryer, Joyce and Les decided to sail around the world and left Southern California heading south. They soon learned that the ocean was a dangerous place mainly because of the bad people who were on the ocean with them. They had two encounters with pirates along the coast of Baja, California and docked permanently in the city of LaPaz, Mexico. Joyce and Les lived in Baja for eleven years, a time that Joyce described as her eleven year honeymoon.
While in LaPaz, Joyce taught English in the local college. Joyce would row from her ship to the shore, change clothes and get herself to the college. When her classes were done for the day, she reversed the procedure.
When her husband, Les Fryer’s health began to decline, Joyce and Les returned to Oxnard which is when she began teaching in the adult education program of Oxnard Public Schools.
Following the death of her husband, Joyce moved to Austin where she entered Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and became part of her sister Nancy Miller’s family in Austin and later in Elgin.
Joyce was a wife, mother, grandmother, teacher and volunteer. In all these roles she touched many lives and was much loved. When Joyce moved from Austin to Elgin involved in the life of the community, especially First Presbyterian Church, teaching, volunteering and caring for those who needed her.
A lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church in Oxnard, California; Austin, Texas and Elgin, Texas Joyce served as a deacon, elder, Director of Religious Education and delegate to the General Assembly of her denomination. In Oxnard, Joyce was a member of First Presbyterian Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church. In Austin Joyce Sawyer was a member of First Presbyterian Church and finally in Elgin she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where a memorial service was held on Friday, April 15, 2011.
Joyce is survived her family which included her son William Ayres and his wife Karen; step-son William Schoenfeld and his son, William Keefer; her brother Gilbert and his family; her sister Nancy and her husband Richard; nephews Paul and Christina Miller and their two children and Alan and Amy Miller and their two children and by her many friends.
