"Mr. M. S. Avant Dead.
News reached the city yesterday of the death of Mr. M. S. Avant at Tennessee Colony. He died on Thursday and was buried Friday. He was on of the pioneer citizens of the county, and had a host of friends who will be grieved to know of his death."
[Palestine Daily Herald, 21 Aug 1906, Tue, First Edition]

"A TRIBUTE
To M. S. Avant, the True Citizen and Soldier.

Because of fifty years' acquaintance and close association with that noble, true man, M. S. Avant, who died at Tennessee Colony on August 2nd, 1906, justice and my duty demand this. Forty-eight and forty-nine years ago he clerked for Mr. Murchison, then merchant in Palestine and owner of the only iron safe. Mace was a member of our Company, "A," Second T,C., in Confederate army, and was noble, moral, peacable and brave, that proved during the war to be qualities inseparable. He and I and my partners run the only two stores at Tennessee Colony for fourteen years, and we aided each other, and by doing so aided our customers.

Five of our beloved comrades, viz: N. W. Hunter, S. M. Derden, Dr. J. C. J. King, W. A. D. Armstrong and M. S. Avant have been transferred since October 1, 1905, we believe to a better world, where we survivors hope for a solid and everlasting reunion of true men who offered their lives without pay, except for good government, authorized by true and patriotic leaders and constitutional authority for calling to arms and service needed.
Comrade R. M. Jackson,
Co. A., Second T. C., C. S. A."
