"Judges elect Williams to 26th Circuit position

Judge Ian R.D. Williams, the presiding Frederick and Winchester General District court judge, has been elected by fellow judges to serve as chief judge of the respective courts throughout the 26th Judicial Circuit, according to a Monday email from Williams.

The term is from July 1 to June 30, 2021. The 26th Circuit includes Winchester as well as Clarke, Frederick, Page, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Warren counties. The judge’s duties include coordinating judicial assignments, addressing conflicts of interests and overseeing the budget for substitute judges.

Williams, 72 of Winchester, was appointed as a substitute district court judge in 2004 by circuit court judges. The General Assembly appointed him as a full-time judge in 2015.

He filled the vacancy left by Judge David S. Whitacre.

Williams earned his bachelor’s degree from the Roanoke College in 1969 and his law degree from the University of Richmond in 1974.
